When you think of winter, I bet you instantly think of a winter wonderland type of scene. Sure, there are lots of things to look forward to once winter arrives, including the gorgeous landscape scenes that snow creates. However, ice and snow aren’t always pretty. Especially when they damage your home. That is why it is very important to make sure your home is winter-proof. Otherwise, you could be spending the colder months doing a lot of work on your property! Not sure what you need to do? Here are my tips and ideas.

Stop Ice Dams

Ice dams are exactly what the name suggests. These little dams are created when ice builds up in your gutters and stops the water from getting out via the drains. Normally, this isn’t too much of a problem if there isn’t a big flow of water. However, if there is a lot of melting snow on your building and the water has nowhere to go, it could end up dripping down your outside walls. This can cause serious water damage to your property. So make sure there is no way ice dams can develop in your gutters. The best way to do this is to keep your gutters clean and regularly check for ice buildup.

Stop Pipes From Freezing

First of all, double-check that there are no polybutylene pipes at all in your house. These leak very easily. Once you are sure that your pipes are in a good condition, you need to prevent them from freezing in the winter. The easiest way to do that is to ensure the temperature of them never drops too much. To do this, turn up your thermostat and insulate any exposed piping. You should also place a small heater close to any areas of piping that are in particularly cold areas of your house.

Inspect Your Heating System

No matter what type of heating system you have, you should inspect it now before the cold weather is here for good. Otherwise, you will find that you don’t have any heating when you really need it! The easiest way to ensure your heating is up to scratch is to call a professional in to service your boiler or furnace for you. Is your main source of heating a coal fire? Then you need to call a chimney sweep to clean your chimney for you start using your fire through winter.

Buy All Your Winter Equipment Now

You need to make sure you have all your essential winter equipment now. Things like a snow shovel and heavy duty broom are very important. These will help you clear snow from your drive. It could also be worth investing in a snow blower, especially if you live in an area that regularly gets heavy snowfall. Don’t forget to also add important winter equipment to your car. Snow tyres and other safety additions can help you complete your journeys safely even if it is snowing.

Think about doing all these little jobs now so that you can enjoy the winter when it arrives!
