How To Decorate Your Home with an International Theme

your home

If you are constantly travelling around the world or if you have been abroad and have very fond memories of your time there then it is understandable why you would want to bring that into your home. There are a couple of ways to do this, and you would really be surprised to see how easy they are to do!

The first thing that you need to do here is choose your theme. You may have a theme in mind based on an interest that you have or even your own lifestyle. For example, you may feel as though a beach theme is the ideal choice if you have just purchased a beach home or you may want to go for the theme of wherever your property is. If you have a property that is in Spain then you may want to adopt this as your theme, so it really is down to you and the personal preferences that you have. If you are really struggling to come up with a theme then try and make a list of all of the things that you have an interest in and then list them by how much you like them. You can even look at themed rooms online to get some ideas as well. If this just isn’t working for you then try and take a trip to your local furniture store. When you do this, look for the things that really stand out to you. You can even make a list of the places you WANT to visit as well, as this is a great way for you to get things started.

Remember that you don’t just have to limit yourself to countries, you could push yourself towards a type of music as well, or even art. For example, if you like country music then you may want to opt for country style paintings or even colours that resemble the countryside.

Design by Room

When you have a theme, or at least an idea of a theme it is then time for you to decide how prominent you want the theme to be. You need to think, do you want the theme to run throughout the entire house? Or do you just want to have it in a single room? If you have a number of interests or if you want to have several rooms with different themes then now is the time for you to plan out what you want and where. It is a good idea for you to not overload the rooms with the themes, and you can even have a neutral room so that you are not overloading things as you go along. You also need to decide where your decorative elements are going to be as well. You only need to have a few focal points here, or even the odd piece of art. This will really help you to tie your room together and it is a great way for you to bring out the best of your property.

Space Things Out

The last thing you’ll want is your international themed items to be right next to each other. If you are struggling here then have a bed throw, for example, across the room from your art. You need to be symmetrical here, so it helps to have two themed lamps right next to your bed as well. The same concept applies to your living room, so if you have a themed sofa then have a piece of art right across from it and then a themed table at either side. This will really help you to bring the whole room together and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to get the best result out of the design itself.

If you have a lot of collections, such as country carvings or even animal figures then don’t be afraid to put them on display. You can even have a shelf that is completely devoted to them if you want, and this is a great way for you to really bring out the look and feel of your room. If you want to step things up to that next level then why not put them in a cabinet or even have them on a table. If you are doing this then try and have them at opposite ends of the room so that you can create the perfect balance. This is one of the best ways for you to really make use of the things that you already have and it is very easy for you to tie things like this in with your international theme. It’s all about cohesive elements here, so if you do have a collection of elephant statues or anything else of the sort, then why not match them in with pillows, curtains or cushions? All of this can make your already existing collectibles fit in very well and it can save you a ton of money as well.

Being Subtle

If you do not want to have too many large themes or elements then you can also choose to be

subtle instead. You can have patterns on your pillows or even opt for different materials. If you want to opt for an American Southwest or country theme then sandstone is a brilliant choice here and you can even have older fixtures as well. This can include older or more traditional lights, so remember that being modern isn’t always the way to go and that there are in fact many other ways for you to really bring a room together.

Your Home and You

So now you have a good idea of how you are going to theme your room. If your home is not in the best condition before you theme your room however then this will cause you serious problems. You may find that the theme brings out the negative features of your home and this is something that you’ll want to avoid. For example, if you are opting for a worn out, rugged theme then having a cracked window will only make your home look like it is actually rugged, and not intentionally done. If you want to make sure that this doesn’t happen then analyse your home for anything that could go against it. Hire a glass repairs service and have a good clean up, so you have the perfect canvas to start out with.

Of course, it’s important to note that you don’t have to go with an international theme and that there are in fact plenty of other themes to go with. You could choose a warm and comforting theme, and if you want to do this then opt for a rustic design with plenty of furniture. You can even pair this with various rectangular elements, and this could include cushions, rugs and so much more. To go with a formal style, make sure that you focus on symmetry and opt for exquisite furniture as well. Don’t limit yourself and try and raise your ceilings. Polished wood is always a bonus when you are going for the formal theme and don’t be afraid to shop around antique stores or even second-hand shops as this is a great way for you to pick up a great deal and it is an even better way for you to try and save money as well.

To go for a contemporary style then opt for a simple style. With this, you’ll want to focus on neutral colours while also choosing furniture that is very smooth and even geometric. If you go to your local furniture store you’ll find something that fits in with this perfectly.

So if you want to decorate your house then this is very easy to do and all you have to do is think about what you really want from your home and what your interests are. When you have this in mind, you can then base entire rooms around that one idea, and this is a brilliant way for you to make your home more unique and to even embrace the design that you already have. By doing this, you can even add even more value to your home and this is one of the best ways for you to really bring out its true potential. Just remember not to have too many themes across your home, and to always have a neutral room as this will help to bring the whole thing into perspective and it will also help you to really make sure that the idea you have is going to work

If you are not sure if you can pull of the design yourself or if you are worried that you will end up spending a ton of money on things that just don’t work well together then one way for you to get around this would be for you to hire an interior designer. They can help you to get the theme that you want and they can even help you to make sure that your theme works with the style of home you have.
