However, we should do as our eyes are without doubt one of our most vital organs.

Around 85 percent of blindness is preventable, with the right care. Don’t get us wrong, if you miss one eye doctor appointment, you won’t go blind. That being said, you should always make your eye health a priority.

See your eye doctor regularly

The most important thing that you can do to ensure that your eyes are as healthy as possible is see your eye doctor regularly. Even if your eyes seem fine, it’s important to see your eye doctor at least once a year for a checkup. Some eye problems have no symptoms and can only be diagnosed by an eye test, which is why regular testing is so important. Book an appointment at your local opticians every six to 12 months to make sure your eyes are as healthy as possible.

Be smart about glasses and contact lenses

If you have a vision problem, be smart about it. If you’re diagnosed with a sight problem and prescribed glasses or contacts, don’t make the mistake of not wearing them. Often, vision problems can be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses, so if you’ve been prescribed them, wear them. Else, you’ll only cause more damage to your eyes.

Wear sunglasses

As well as damaging your skin, the sun’s UV rays can also damage your eyes. That’s why it’s important that when you go out in the sun that you protect your eyes with sunglasses. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all glasses protect your eyes from UV rays because that’s not the case. It’s only sunglasses that say they offer UV protection that protect your eyes. It might cost you a little more to get good quality ones, but it’s worth it. After all, you only get one set of eyes.

Stick to the 20-20-20 rule

If you work on computers, you can damage your eyes by straining them. That’s why it’s so important that you stick to the 20-20-20 rule, as it will help to protect your eyes from damage. Did you know that staring at your computer screen for long periods of time can cause headaches, blurry eyes and dry eyes? To prevent this, every 20 minutes stop what you’re doing and stare 20 feet in front of you. Do this for 20 seconds and then repeat every 20 minutes – hence the name ‘the 20-20-20’ rule.

There you have it, everything that you need to know to keep your eyes happy and healthy.
