My smile before treatment

Over the last few years I’ve become increasingly busy as a Style and Beauty Expert, TV Presenter and columnist. Back in February I was ranked in the top 100 LFW AW14 social media influencers and am currently Brand Ambassador for Pears Soap. I regularly appear as a guest presenter talking fashion and beauty on chat shows, commercials and for brands and because of all this media work have become increasingly conscious about my uneven smile.

On the day of my treatment, my uneven teeth

Some people call me the queen of selfies and yes I do pout but actually its not why readers may initially think, it’s because I subconsciously hated my smile and my uneven teeth. When I’ve watched back TV footage at times I just cringe and have considered veneers time and time again. However I’ve always had anxiety about the dentist’s chair and the thought of the pain of my teeth being reduced to pins. Which I later found out is so far from the truth if you go to a talented specialised cosmetic dentist.

My teeth were so uneven, I hated smiling

So when it got to the point of no return after watching a recent fashion interview my smile looked so crooked and horrendous, I decided to call in the expertise of world class expert Dr Julian Caplan as he specialises in Cerec smiles in a day.

Dr Julian Caplan – Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry

Dr Julian Caplan is Immediate-past President of The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is an international lecturer and world expert on the use of computers to design and manufacture (CadCam). He has lectured internationally on how to give a new smile in a day, including many Middle East, European countries and the USA. His practice is a cosmetically based private practice treating patients with simple cosmetic issues such as tooth colour to more advanced multidisciplinary procedures involving complete rebuilding of severely deteriorated mouths. This often involves orthodontics, crowns, veneers and dental implants. He practices in both St.Albans at Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry and also in the West End.

We got to know each other after working on my Beauty TV series together Harley Street Beauty. Julian was the shows resident dentist and performed numerous cases that amazed viewers. I was so impressed by his one-day veneer cases that I decided to make the decision to go to Julian to change my smile for good.

I’ve always felt very conscious about my smile and working as a TV presenter for the last 10 years has posed a lot of self-esteem issues for me. For most women and men their wedding day is one of the most important of their lives and they want to look and feel their best and look back on the day with pure joy.

Unfortunately most peoples’ experience when having porcelain veneers is having their teeth cut back, sometimes heavily into their sensitive dentine, which I thought was the only option.  Studies show that the longevity of veneers is dependent on a number of factors but one of the major factors is bonding onto the enamel of the tooth.  The enamel is the hard covering of the tooth and protects the sensitive dentine and also reduces the amount of flex the teeth undergoes when eating, clenching or grinding their teeth.

“The ideal tooth preparation for a veneer is no preparation.  This requires the veneers made to be ultrathin so they do not make the tooth stick out or look too thick but also for the material they are made from to be ultra-strong.” Dr Julian Caplan. Which Julian proved to me was more than possible.

Cadcam Technology

Cerec Cadcam is a technique used by Dr Julian Caplan that allows him to make veneers just 0.1mm thick and made from an incredibly strong porcelain called Emax.

Cadcam stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture and this allowed Dr Caplan to give me a life changing new smile in just one day!

Feeling Anxious before my Treatment
Feeling Anxious before my Treatment

When Julian designed my new smile he was able to precisely work out what was needed to be done to the teeth to allow me to have a beautiful, natural smile before starting my treatment.   He discussed the final colour with me.  I wanted a glamorous but natural smile.  Julian then advised me on the level of  bleach shade and that the porcelain were to have a high translucent.  This would provide me with a touch of glamour yet they would still look like they were my own teeth.  From a “trial smile” made for me he decided that there was no need to shape 8 of my teeth and only a light shaping of my central incisors was needed, which was such a relief and surprise.  This meant that the veneers were bonded to enamel, which meant I can honestly say I had no pain  during or after treatment and they will last for decades.

 So these were the stages:

Stage1:  The day began with the trial smile been shown to me for my approval. This was constructed in my mouth and allowed me to see the approximate final colour ( far better than photographic imaging as these imagings may not truly represent what is actually possible). The trial smile was then scanned using a special camera into a computer.

The trial smile was removed and after Julian completely painlessly numbed the two front teeth, he lightly shaped them. A minor lasering procedure was used to reposition the gum line on one of the front teeth.  The teeth were then scanned again and the 2 images were morphed together on the computer to allow Julian to make the individual veneers. This was all completed in about an hour.

Stage2: I then relaxed and did a spot of shopping whilst Julian busied himself making the veneers.  Using the computers incredible software he designed each veneer and milled each one from a block of Emax porcelain.  They were then refined by hand by Julian and carefully glazed to give the final natural look.

In the afternoon the veneers were ready to be fitted and I can’t believe that within 8 hours I was walking away with my new smile!  I couldn’t believe the transformation of not only my teeth but also my face, I now have perfect symmetry, I am over the moon and can’t thank Julian enough for his expert advise, skill and craftsmanship designing the teeth so naturally and in such a gorgeous natural but bright colour. They feel like they are my own and I have had so many complements from friends and family. I can honestly say this has been a life changing experience.
