Ouch That Hurts! Causes And Cures Of Neck Pain

Every so often we will all wake up with severe pain in our neck. Usually, this is because we have slept on it in a weird way. Perhaps you stretched across the bed with your head bent over putting pressure on it for hours. If you are careful when you are waking up, you can avoid causing severe pain. However, if your alarm jolts you awake you’re going to snap up, and you might hear your neck click. At that point, you can experience severe levels of pain. Of course, sleeping funny is not the only cause of severe neck pain. Here are some of the others.

A Real Pain In The Neck

It’s not just an expression, neck pain can be a result of a wide range of experiences. One of the most common is whiplash. When you’re in a car crash if something hits you from behind it can push your body forward and your head backward. This results in a strain on your neck that won’t be apparent straight away. You might notice the effect the day after, a few weeks down the line or even months later. There’s no way to know when it’s going to have an impact but it will be painful when it does. You might even need to wear a brace to keep your neck in place.

You can also damage your neck playing sports or exercising. You could fall on it awkwardly, or you could simply stretch it a little too far. Turning your neck rapidly can result in that painful click that will make it feel stiff for days.

Does this mean that your neck is quite vulnerable? Actually, contrary to all the movies you’ve seen where someone snaps a person’s neck, the human neck is remarkably strong. It will withstand an enormous amount of pressure. Not to go to a dark place but if you want to choke someone you have to get the right spot. Otherwise, it won’t have any effect.

So what should do if you wake up one morning and your neck is in severe pain?

Common Cures And Fixes

Well, you can start by using heat to help fix your neck. Heat on your neck will soothe the muscles and help it relax. You can either use heat pads, have a long soak in the bath or even spend half an hour in shower. Once you get out you should feel like the pain is already starting to subside.

If the pain lasts for a few days, you can make it worse by sleeping in certain positions. That’s why you may want to look into getting one of the best pillows for side sleepers. Sleeping on your side, you should be able to keep the pressure off your neck and avoid any further damage.

Believe it or not, you can also fix your neck by clicking it back into place. To do this, tilt your head back as far as it will go. Turn it to the side and then move it around in a semicircular motion. Keep turning until you feel or hear a click. This can be painful, but if you can reach the point, you can fix your neck and relieve pain. It will also mean that it heals faster.
