In Conversation with Stephen Jones

In Conversation with Stephen Jones

So last night was an incredibly insightful evening for the fashion set, I left feeling inspired and uplifted at a career that spans 3-4 decades. I was kindly invited to attend the Fashion school Istituto Marangoni’ ‘In Conversation with Stephen Jones‘. The interview was hosted by Jessica Bumpus who delivered a fun but thorough interview which lasted over an hour to an engrossed fashion collective. The Istituto Marangoni which has schools with Fashion, art and design courses in Milan, Florence, Paris, London and Shanghai is aptly located on Fashion Street in the heart of East London and a perfect venue for such a talk.

Stephen Jones OBE (born 1957) is a leading British milliner based in London, who is considered one of the world’s most radical and important milliners of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.[1] He is also one of the most prolific, having created hats for the catwalk shows of many leading couturiers and fashion designers, such as John Galliano at Dior and Vivienne Westwood.[2] His work is known for its inventiveness and the high level of technical expertise with which he realises his ideas.[3] Jones co-curated the 2009 exhibition Hats: An Anthology for the Victoria and Albert Museum.[4]” Wikipedia.

Not only was Stephen humble about his success but also clear on the journey of being, becoming and living life as a designer. The path is not easy, the journey can be incredibly tough but success shouldn’t be measured in financial terms. Choosing a creative career in design/fashion is like a road less travelled you will be eternally skint and one needs to be prepared for this. Even if one collection is globally successful it doesn’t mean the next will. He has worked with some of the greatest and most successful creative minds in the world which is just such an inspiration to be in the company of such a witty, refined yet humble talent.

Here’s just a few of his latest creations. I hope to interview him soon and share some of his incredible stories, his successes and stresses in his career.
