Hypnobirthing with The Calm Birth School

Hypnobirthing with The Calm Birth School

After a traumatic 38 hour induced labour with my daughter over 5 years ago the whole experience did put me off going through it anytime soon. 5.5 years on and I’m now 7.5 months pregnant with my second child, so this time decided that my approach to labour and birth needed to be different. I needed to feel more in control of my emotions and the approach leading upto the birth. My baby boy is due at the end of March and being a very busy Freelance fashion and beauty columnist and presenter I will be working probably close to my due date. Then won’t have the luxury of a maternity leave as it’s taken me years to get where I am as a freelancer and I can’t afford to just disappear for the next year. I had heard about hypnobirthing and my midwife had also suggested it. I looked into courses and some are every week for 2-3 hours with homework in the middle over a 4-5 week period. Well unfortunately time is not a luxury I can indulge in so those classes where straight out the window then I thought wait, an online Hypnobirthing course would we perfect it can fit around moi, my brood, work and I can do it as and when I please. Thats when I found The Calm Birth School and I can honestly say it has already completely changed my life in such a positive way.

My day tends to look like this; get up at 6am, prepare my 5 year old for school go running or power walking by 8, clean by 9 and work 9-3 the days I’m on school pick up and then working again when my daughter is in bed or starting at 6am but out in London until 8/9pm. So I am constantly going super speed and never have time for myself.

The Calm Birth School hypnobirthing approach basically consists of a four week course: there’s 3 videos a week to watch, a weekly learning journal and additional MP3’s to download which you can listen to at any point in your day. I am honestly obsessed, the owners Suzy and Holly are positive and supportive and always there to help where they can. The content is so easy to navigate and I love their videos. Also the course at £150 is much more affordable than going for an in-class experience. Another key point is most men may not embrace going to classes where they feel uncomfortable in that environment with strangers but this gives my hubby the chance to embrace the approach without feeling like he’s being forced to do something out of his comfort zone.

The way the course is structured you need to watch the videos, practice your breathing and read the learning journals. Normally I put things on the back burner after work and family but this I have wholeheartedly embraced as its so easy to do and actually very comforting. I have been listening to my MP3 Affirmations daily and using breathing techniques on my daily dog walk which is just making my day start on a calmer more positive note rather than the usual chaos which can be my day. I even have my hubby and 5 year old using the breathing when they feel stressed. I feel completely calm and positive about the ensuing birth and don’t feel apprehensive or scared at all, like I have for the last 5.5 years after such a previously traumatic experience.

This has not only changed my approach to labour but is helping me and my family stay calmer in everyday life and the girls are so fun and positive in their videos I just can’t wait to watch. I’d like to say thanks so much to two lovely ladies Suzy and Holly that are making such an impact on my pregnancy and life. Thanks so much  for your influence and guidance I highly recommend Hypnobirthing and even more so The Calm Birth School approach. Now I can’t wait for labour and the birth of my baby boy thanks to these lovelies.

So here’s the facts from the school itself:

The Calm Birth School home study program is a four-week antenatal video program training women and their birth partners to create calm, joyful births from anywhere in the world.

Whether you’re planning a hospital, home, or midwife-led birth, they’ll guide you and your partner through their unique method for creating a smooth birth experience…all from the ease of your armchair. So that for the rest of your pregnancy, you’ll feel fearless, not freaked out!

Ever since they had their own positive, euphoric, comfortable births, they knew they had to spread the word. So created The Calm Birth School and have been teaching everyday women here in the UK since 2011 the core principles of hypnobirthing and the active birth movement to provide a holistic approach to their antenatal care.

  • No vagina-whispering, kumbaya-singing, goddess-channeling nonsense.
  • Just scientifically-proven calming and relaxation techniques, so that you know what is happening in your body and how to work with it.
  • They’re on a mission to reduce the birthing horror stories, one informed woman at a time.
  • Finally, they’ve created a virtual course so you and your partner can learn these techniques without leaving your home or your cozy slippers.
