Help Your Partner Quit Their Addiction Without Losing Your Mind

Being the partner of a recovering addict can be exhausting. It can even cause you to question your entire relationship and its future. Watching someone you’re in love with suffering through withdrawals, self-confidence issues, and relapses is draining and demoralizing. But you’re still there because you love them, and you know the person they can be without their addiction. If your partner has finally made the decision to get themselves back on the straight and narrow, here are some ways you can help them to progress with their recovery.

Talk to them about their problems

While they should probably be in therapy for professional help with their recovery, their therapist can’t be there 24/7. When your partner gets a craving that has them pulling their hair out, you’re the person there to help them through it. When they’re at rock bottom, being able and willing to listen to your partner talk about their experience in their recovery and grieve the loss of their addiction with you makes you a crucial part of the process. Keep yourself educated and well informed about the various stages of recovery, so you’re not taken by surprise by any part of the process.

Keep triggers out of the home

If your partner is recovering from an alcohol addiction, it’s probably best to keep the alcohol out of the house while they’re getting over it. Making it more difficult to score whatever they’re craving might just be the barrier they need to stop themselves from relapsing. If you still want to drink while they’re recovering, ensure you do it at a friend’s house or at the bar, not at home. It just makes it more difficult to withstand temptation.

Help them to find therapy

Recovering addicts are far more likely to stick on their path to recovery when they have appropriate therapy and rehabilitation. In some cases, just the therapy and group support might suffice, but people with more consuming problems might prefer to go to a rehabilitation centre such as Beachway for a more comprehensive treatment plan. Trying to go it alone not only increases the risk of relapsing but can cause further mental health problems. Spend some time with your partner researching the possibilities, and deciding which one suits you both best. This is a joint financial decision, so don’t leave it to them.

Take care of number one

Living with an addict and being their sole support system can really take its toll on your own mental health. Many rehabilitation programs also include therapy groups for affected family members, because the risk of ongoing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety can be particularly high. Try to avoid allowing the situation to isolate you from your friends and family – you need your support group at this time just as much as your partner does.

Helping your partner to quit and stay quit can be a long and painful process, with many ups and downs along the way. Remember why you’re doing this, and remind yourself frequently why you love them. You’ll get through it together.
