The little black dress is arguably the most versatile piece of clothing that you have in your wardrobe. Here are some ways to dress it up or down for different occasions…

An Office

If you want to wear your little black dress to work, it’s important to make sure that you style it right. Most workplaces advise that you wear business casual clothing, so you should make sure that if your dress falls above your knees, you wear tights to make sure you aren’t flashing too much skin. Likewise, if it’s sleeveless then make sure you wear a jacket or cardigan with it (this can also help you to make sure you don’t freeze to death in the face of the inevitably chilling office air conditioning). If you want to go with a little more colour then why not wear heels in a colour that isn’t black, like red or nude (which, when worn with a nude stocking, can lengthen your legs).

A Bar

If you’re ready to party, then a LBD is the perfect thing to throw on so you don’t have to think too hard about what you’re wearing. If the weather’s warm enough, why not go bare legged? Make sure that you’ve exfoliated your legs first, particularly if you’re planning on slapping a little fake tan on. Go for a pair of colourful heels, but make sure that they’re comfortable so that you can dance all night without waking up with sore toes the next morning. Accessorise with some blingy jewelry – hip hop jewelry always looks incredible and makes a real statement. Anything with plenty of glittering silver and gold will make you the centre of attention.

A Date

Finding the right clothing to wear on a first date can be one of the most stressful things about it – along with wondering if you’re going to fall over anything or forget your own name. Wearing the right thing can at least reduce some of the stress and allow you to enjoy yourself instead. Make sure that you feel comfortable by going with shoes that you can easily walk in, whether that’s suede ankle boots or a pair of nice flats. On a first date, it’s a good idea not to go too quirky – it might seem as though you’re trying too hard to be zany. Instead, wear jewelry that you love and that shows off your personality without going too crazy. Depending on what exactly you’re doing on your date, you can dress up or down – if you’re going out to a nice restaurant then you could wear a colourful silk jacket over your dress, but if you’re going for coffee then you could go for a faded denim jacket along with your favourite comfortable combat boots.

A Funeral

Unfortunately, if you have a faithful, well-fitting black dress then you’re likely to wear it on somber occasions as well as fun ones – and a funeral is probably top of the list of where you want to make sure that you look well-dressed and respectful. Make sure that your black dress doesn’t reveal too much skin, and that you’re wearing an appropriate jacket, like a long black coat. If part of the funeral service takes place outside, you should make sure that you’re wearing a pair of waterproof boots – you don’t want your heels to sink into the mud or to step into a deep puddle or hole in the ground when you’re wearing flimsy flat shoes. Make sure that you take a pair of smarter shoes with you to change into. Remember that a lot of funerals don’t require you to wear all black – ask what’s appropriate, and add a pretty flowered scarf or some elegant jewellery if you want.

A Coffee Shop

One of the best things about a LBD is that it can be dressed down just as easily as it can be dressed up – and if you fling it on with your favourite battered leather jacket and biker boots then you’re good to go for a Saturday morning coffee date with your best friend, or maybe Sunday mimosas after a crazy night the day before. Put on some cosy thick woollen tights to protect you from the last of the wintery chill and go for a chunky knitted scarf in one of your favourite bright colours to add a little more brightness to the outfit. Maroon, mustard yellow and forest green are all incredibly popular tones at the moment, and look good on absolutely anyone. If you want to dress it up just a little, add a sharp cat eye with some black liquid eyeliner, and you’ll be good to go.
