EMERGING TALENT – LFW SHOWROOM HIGHLIGHTS

Apart from the buzz of shows and presentations the showrooms are another exciting place to view collections of up and coming talent, housed in Somerset house for the entirety of London Fashion Week. Below are my personal favourites and one’s to watch out for;

JENA THEO

JenaTheo was founded by Jenny Holmes and Dimitris Theocharidis. Jenny had been a buyer for an international retailer, and Dimitris worked as a freelance designer. They met at the London College of Fashion in 2002, and were instantly drawn to work together. The combination of their strong creative backgrounds and contrasting heritages, British and Greek, is a limitless source of inspiration. Their love for street style, and abstract approach to pattern cutting creates beautiful collections which combine Dimitris’ talent for intricate detail with Jenny’s gift for volume and bold lines. Each collection is formed of striking new silhouettes that challenge traditional conventions of design.


CHARLIE MAY
Charlie May born and raised in Devon later moved to Bristol to study Fashion Design at UWE. In 2011, just one year after graduating, she decided to start her own womenswear label, showcasing 10 looks to key fashion press for S/S12 as well as a short fashion film featuring key silhouettes from the collection. September 2012 saw Charlie present her first solo catwalk show for S/S13 during London Fashion Week which she continues to do each season.
For A/W13 Charlie collaborated with accessories designer Danielle Foster to create a 9 piece collection that was debuted along with the ready-to-wear at LFW. Both these collections are now available to buy on Charlie’s e-commerce site, launched in August 2013.

HAVVA SHOES

HAVVA is a contemporary brand delivering forever chic women’s footwear, while paying the upmost attention to detail.  Embracing the simplicity of the lines, shape of the shoe and using quality materials. With a distinct individuality of core and seasonal signature pieces involving fine design elements, this makes them recognisable to the brand. 

A family-owned company, who’s knowledge has seeped through three generations and been passed down to head designer Havva Mustafa. Following in the footsteps of her father Nafi Mustafa, she created her own brand and identity with HAVVA. The logo, originally designed by Nafi in the 1980s bared his own initials NM, taking that heritage and redesigning it with feminine elements and using her own initials. This along with a wealth of experience within design, manufacture, leather and consultancy sectors, with the love for the craft has given HAVVA’s unique designs long lasting appeal.



MINGPIN TIEN

Originally from Taipei, Taiwan Mingpin Tien is a London based fashion designer.  He came to London to complete his MA in Fashion Design & Technology Womenswear at London College of Fashion. He set up his brand in 2012 and showcased the first collection in September 2012 with Fashion Scout by winning their Ones To Watch. This AW14 collection is his 4th collection and the first time showing in Somerset House with British Fashion Council.  The strength of Ming’s design lies in the knowledge of complex pattern cutting and an individual point of view in beauty and fashion, which makes him skilled at interpreting and executing conceptual designs. 




KZENIYA BAGS

Founded in 2010 by Kzeniya Oudenot a grad of St. Martins College. Before setting up the label Kzeniya organised events, designed sets and costumes for operas and ballets using unique cutting edge technology. She’s worked for Alexander McQueen, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet and showcased her work at the Science Museum London. While experimenting with printing techniques on leather Kzeniya fell in love with the art of leather accessories.




MARTINE JARLGAARD
Born and raised in Denmark, Martine studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Upon graduation she was invited and sponsored by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana to show the collection ‘Dress me until I disappear in Better Beauty’ in the Italian Haute Couture Fashion Week in 2004. After her graduation she was hired by Vivienne Westwood in London, where she for the next four years was heading the Vivienne Westwood Red Label. Martine then continued working for All Saints and later as Head of Design for Diesel Female Apparel in Italy before launching her eponymous label in London.


MARIA FRANCESCA PEPE ACCESSORIES

MFP creates a changing avant-garde aesthetic which is far from the obvious. This mix allows MFP collections to be sought after by a variety of discerning consumers, regardless of age or background. Their ideal client is anyone who desires high quality handcrafted pieces with an edge. MFP’s followers and supporters include: Lady Gaga, Rihanna, 
Marianne Faithfull, Jennifer Lopez, Florence & The Machine, Kelly Rowland, Jo Whiley and many more.
