As we get older, we are subject to our health deteriorating in many different ways. No matter how well we have taken care of ourselves, we never truly know what the future holds. Although we are certainly less at risk if we have an active and healthy lifestyle in our younger years, it’s always worth being mindful of potential issues we could all face, especially in our later years. With that in mind here are some of the most common issues.

Memory loss

Our memory isn’t the same as what it used to be as we age. Of course, this is a natural stage of getting older, and something people become more aware of. Perhaps forgetting where they have put their keys or appointments in the future. It tends to be the short term things and never the long term memories. But this could also be the early signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Something there is sadly no cure for and can get progressively worse over time cause people to forget family members while the disease fights the nervous system in the brain. Thankfully, alzheimers care is much improved and can even be offered in-house to ensure that the person affected stays in known surroundings.

If you have been diagnosed with depression, it is likely that you have already noticed what a huge impact it can have on your life. You may be experiencing problems sleeping or eating. It is also common to be subject to depression as you get older, things like losing any enthusiasm for doing things that use to make you happy becomes a much more regular occurrence. Or even feeling trapped in your own surroundings due to poor movability or aid. But there are things that you can do to help deal with the symptoms of depression. The first thing is that you need to seek some help, often a visit to the doctors is more than enough to take positive steps in the right direction.

Loss of hearing

Losing your hearing is also a difficult life crisis to get through that nearly 1 in 20 people will suffer at some point in their lives. However, it can be more common in later life. Even your career or lifestyle could play a part in causing loss of hearing. It can feel isolating and confusing. Some things that can help. Some people find that using things like hearing aids can allow them to follow conversations better. Others find making adjustments in their lives like getting a hearing dog or lights to signal when the doorbell rings can make a huge difference.

Loss of sight

Losing your eyesight can have a huge impact on your life. As one of our major senses, we rely on our sight for so many things. We consume entertainment in the form of TV shows, films and games through sight. We are made aware of danger and warning signs. We use our eyes to communicate just as much as our mouths. If you are someone that is being affected by a loss of sight, you may find it useful to make adjustments in your home like using an audio phone or a guide dog.
