Times are changing and it seems that more and more of us are appreciating the benefits of the experience or memory of a gift, as opposed to a standard object, wrapped in paper with a bow slapped on top. While there’s nothing wrong with traditional presents, clothing, bath soaps, books and jewellery, it appears that there’s a general shift towards giving the ones we love incredible experiences instead.

Travel is one of the most enjoyable adventures you can treat someone to.Thus, buying a romantic getaway for your loved one to a place they’ve never visited before is a great idea. But, where should you go? The Telegraph lists no less than 50 romantic destinations to visit all over the world, ranging from a champagne dinner dates with Gaudi in Barcelona to a wildlife safari in Botswana, and these are just a few of the best from the bunch.

India

Mystical culture combined with sheer madness is perhaps one of the best ways of describing what India has in store. One of the most romantic trips to India would have to include a visit to the pink-hued palaces and gorgeous placid lakes of Udaipur, or a journey to Kanyakumari to see the sun set at the same time as the moon begins to rise. If you love the idea of a classic romantic trip to India, there’s nothing that can beat the country’s most famous piece of architecture, located in Agra: the mesmerising Taj Mahal.

For a more dynamic experience of India’s romantic landscape, take a trip to the Himalayan Mountains and indulge in a range of adventurous activities, which could include anything from paragliding, to skiing and mountaineering. Just make sure that you’ve taken out the appropriate travel insurance beforehand. You can also opt for an inspiring camel trek beneath the star-filled skies of the mysterious Jaisalmer Desert, or visit the incredible barren landscapes of the salt lakes at Gujarat.

Seychelles

Dubbed as the most beautiful islands on Earth, the Seychelles are without a doubt one of the most romantic destination you could ever hope to visit. Picture sun, sand and beautiful turquoise waters that stretch on for as far as the eye can see and you’ll have a fair idea of what to expect. The islands are made from granitic and coral and are located around 1,100 miles from the Tanzanian coast.

Despite the pristine character of these islands, there’s something beautifully wild about them too, with hawksbill turtles, completely unthreatened, come ashore during the day to lay their eggs. One of the most romantic walks to enjoy will take you across the island known as Praslin. Shaped like a squiggle, it’s home to large forests of coco de mer palm, a tree species that’s completely unique to the Seychelles.

Rome

If you love cities, then one of the most romantic ones to visit in Europe would have to be Rome. Classical ruins, Renaissance palazzos and Baroque fountains stand next to each other with such natural ease and security. With a pulsating energy, passionate and alive, Rome is definitely one of those cities that never sleeps and where everyone looks like a catwalk model.

The most challenging thing about visiting Rome is deciding what not to include on your to-do list, as there are so many churches, archaeological sites, piazzas and paintings to see that it can be quite overwhelming at times. Without a speck of doubt, anyone who visits Rome must see The Colosseum. Half circus, half sports arena, it’s Rome’s most famous classical ruin and dates back to 80 AD with the capacity to seat more than 50,000 people. Make a special effort to visit the Vatican Museums too. The incredible talent of Michelangelo’s masterpiece is not something you’ll want to miss.

Marrakesh

Flame-lit streets by night and intricate, bustling souks by day, Marrakesh is a romantic experience like no other. If you love the idea of enjoying a sunrise or sunset in a hot-air balloon, with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and nearby desert surroundings in the background, then Marrakesh is the destination for you.

If you’re not a lover of heights, then you could try combining a camel trek across the Sahara followed by an evening filled with entertainment from Gnawa musicians, snake charmers and storytellers. For anyone looking to keep things a little more intimate, there’s little in this world that’s more romantic than a candlelit dinner on a rooftop, with the distant call of the muezzin prayer in the background.
