Is it Possible to Take a Week Long Holiday with Just Hand Luggage?

When you book a holiday, the checked luggage fees can add a hefty price tag onto the cost of your flight. With some airlines charging more for checked bags than the price of the actual flight ticket, it’s no surprise that many travellers are looking for more and more ways to travel as lightly as possible and save money. If you have a holiday planned, you might be wondering whether or not you’ll be able to get away with just taking your cabin bag, foregoing those expensive checked bag prices. Read on for the best tips for travelling light – even if you’re going for a week or more.

Your Destination

The destination that you’re planning on travelling to will have a lot of say as to whether or not you’ll be able to get away with just taking your cabin bag. If you’re travelling to a warm, sunny area, the clothes you’ll be packing are likely to be lightweight and easy to fold – making it easy for you to get them all into your cabin bag without trouble. But, if you’re travelling to a colder climate, it might be more difficult to fit warmer and thicker clothing items in. It can still be done, though – just be prepared to have less outfits for the week.

Toiletries

One of the most important things to consider when you’re packing a cabin bag to last you for a week-long holiday is toiletries and liquid items. Because all liquids have to be under 100ml each and fit into the plastic ziplock bag that you are given at the airport, it’s a good idea to make sure that all toiletries items such as soap, shampoo, sun cream and perfume are measured out beforehand so that you don’t have them confiscated. If you’re taking your make-up bag, remember that items such as lip gloss or mascara have to go in the liquids bag too. Powder make-up and pencil eyeliner are good alternatives that can be packed with the rest of your luggage. Another tip is to buy items such as soap, shampoo and sun cream when you arrive.

Weighing Beforehand

Before you pack your cabin bag, make sure that you know all of the restrictions for weight and size set out by your airline. Different airlines have different weight limits for cabin bags, with the most common being around 8 or 10kg. Once your bag is packed, use a home luggage scales to make sure that it’s within the weight limit, and measure it to be sure that it is the right dimensions. You can buy specially designed cabin bags that fit the guidelines from most airlines at Rimowa and other quality luggage stores. This step is essential, as if your bag is over the weight limit or the wrong size, you’ll be charged to check it in as hold luggage. Don’t forget that most airlines will also allow you to take another smaller bag on board alongside your cabin bag that you can store additional items in.
